Subject: [!] Upload announcements: Some thoughts
[I think these suggestions are generally very good. -Bill]
I have recently had a look at the folder in which I have saved the
upload announcements, and I thought "some of these could have a better
subject line". So I have typed the following, hoping that it might help
others when submitting upload announcements:
=============== =============== =============== ===============
===============
This is a list of some thoughts about the subject lines of
upload announcements.
Upload announcement's subject lines should at least include information
about:
*********************************
* Name title and version number *
*********************************
The name title should be in "title form", i.e. with beginning capital
letters.
The version number should preferrably be in N.N.N format.
Example:
Subject: [*] StuffIt Lite 3.0.5
Please provide a version number! It makes updating much easier.
A very short description of category might be nice.
Some Example:
arc (=archiver application),
app (=application),
art (=piece of art ~ picture),
cdev (=control device),
clock (=clock application),
code (=source code),
comm (=communication),
doc (=document),
draw (=draw application),
edit (=editor ~ file manipulation application)
ex (=extension, usually includes cdev and init)
font (=font),
game (=game [no wild life ;-])
init (=initial xxx),
lang (=language),
man (=manual),
music (=music [usually longer than a sound]),
paint (=paint application),
pict (=picture),
rep (=report),
rev (=review),
sound (=sound),
ssav (=screen saver application),
stack (=hypercard stack),
text (=text ~ doc ~ man ~ rev)
tool (=tool ~ utility),
util (=utility ~ tool)
Please do not use CAPS (capital letters) if it isn't an abbreviation.
No path names or file names or file types ("hqx", "qtm", "sit", "sea").
Bad Example:
Subject: [*] info-mac/art/qt/ufo.hqx
None of these strings, please:
"Announcing", "Demo of", "New version of ...",
"Please post this in the directory ...", "Posting ... upgrade",
"Program submission", "Re:", "Release", "Submission"
These are quite redundant.
Documents/manuals/reviews:
Put "document", "manual", "review" after the title and version number.
Demos:
Put "Demo" after the title and version number.
Example:
Subject: [*] Empire Master 2.6 Demo
Font:
Put "Font: " before the description.
Subject: [*] Font: "Vietfont" (TT) Vietnamese letters
Subject: [*] Font: "ZallmanCaps" (TT, caps, serif)
Patches:
Put "Patch" after the title and version number.
Music/Sounds:
Put "Sound: " before the description or the text (if the sound is speech).
Example:
Subject: [*] Sound: "I am not a crook" (Nixon)
Subject: [*] Sound: Kisses and Laughter
Subject: [*] Sound: Led Zeppelin samples
Startup Screens:
Put "StartupScreen: " before the description of the picture.
Subject: [*] StartupScreen: Madonna
Updater programs are best given as
"<title> <old version> -> <new version> Updater".
Example:
Subject: [*] StuffIt Deluxe 3.0.4 -> 3.0.5 Updater
Not very helpful subject lines:
Subject: [*] New Posting
Subject: [*] New Submission
Subject: [*] No Subject (file transmission)
Subject: [*] None
Subject: [*] Update
Subject: [*] Upload

MacToISO is an ASCII Macintosh to ISO-8859-1 (also known as
ISO Latin-1) converter.
Changes in version 1.0.1b:
I've modified the translation table (see tech info) so now
I don't make any assumptions about extensions to the standard
Latin-1 code. Briefly, I don't use the reserved $80-$9F codes
-therefore some Mac characters will be substituted by spaces
($20) and some other will be replaced by a good (I hope) approach

To any and all who are curious:
Here is a collection of responses that I received regarding my question
about obtaining a personal internet connection. I've abandoned that
particular quest until some rich relative dies or personal internet
connections become more common. The following letters contain some
information (mostly depressing) about getting an internet connection
and also other info about various new online services (the next best
thing). This collection is rather long (1400+ lines) and therefore
belongs in the report directory. Note, this is a _collection_ of the
responses, not really a report. Of course Info-Mac isn't really a

The build-in video on the Quadra 700/900 does not support the 1024x768
resolution (the so-called 19" resolution) at any pixel depth. However, the
Quadra 800/950, as well as the new Centris 650, do support the 19"
resolution at 8-bit with 1MB VRAM. All Quadras and Centris support the 21"
resolution (1152x870) at 8-bit with 1MB VRAM. To display 16-bit (or 24-bit)
color at either 19" or 21" resolution, you would need a third party video
card. The NEC 5FG (or any autoscanning monitor with a horizontal scanning
frequency higher than 68.7kHz and a video bandwidth greater than 100MHz) is
capable of displaying Apple 21" resolution (even though the NEC 5FG is
actually a 16/17" monitor).

Over the past few info-macs and the current TidBITS people have been
saying that the new "tuneup" (sorry, "Hardware System Update") and mode-32

enablers were available on line, specifically ftp.apple.com.
Having checked the ftp site quite often over the past few weeks, I have yet to

there are only the new versions of the "current" 7.1 enablers (duo, vx, 165c,

Info-Mac@sumex-aim.stanford.edu writes:

I'll support that request.
Most corporate users like to keep their Mac on all the time.
This enables overnight back-up, file sharing when people are
away, and minimises thermal cycling.
This poses two problems:
1. Memory Fragmentation: After a while, the RAM gets horribly
fragmented. Further, with time (a week?) the system becomes less
stable. A quick restart cures all this.
2. The second problem is more pernicious. Under 7.0.1 tuned-up & later,
when you run out of RAM, the system proposes to quit application without
active windows. This has the effect of quitting essential services
such as the screensaver, the mail, the meeting maker etc...
I know that both those behaviour are not essentially bad, but to non
understanding users.... the simpler it is, the better it is.
Hence the need for a simple un-quittable application / extension /
control panel to restart the mac every day et a chosen time.
I know of automatic shutdown programs. A slight modification, a different
AppleEvent call, and here we go...
Any takers?

Subject: Bug using Colorizing Hypercard
To anyone who has been using Colorizing Hypercard 1.0:
Colorizing HC works with screens up to 24 bits (1.6 millions colors).
It works indeed, since it uses an offscreen image buffer, which
depends on the System. Of course, since this is some sort of a "hack",
Hypercard doesn't know there's an image behind it.
The problem arises when you try to do a visual effect in HC:
on mouseUp
colorizeHC "Add", "image1.rsrc","0,0,640,480"
visual effect dissolve
go to next card
end mouseUp
Normaly, the transition between two cards works pretty well. But
when you have a color image behind HC, it doesn't do the transition
on the graphical objects located on the card (text, shadow buttons
or graphics), it just go to the next card. I tried color images in
8 bits or 16 bits but no success.
It tried of course using Spinnaker Plus 2.1 for the Mac, but the
cards are limited to 256 colors (and yes I've tried to install the
Colorizing Hypercard XCMD in Plus but it doesn't work either).
Is there a way to make visual effects in HC using Colorizing HyperCard ?
If so, please let me know !

The freeware program, ImageCatalog, by Tom Bereiter will do what you ask. You
can define a folder of PICT files and ImageCatalog will make a contact sheet
of
thumbnails automatically (including names). In addition, if the files are gif
or MacPaint (and perhaps others) files, doubleclicking the thumbnail will
launch the applicationa and open the real file. Pretty useful.

Problem is, I don't. Never have. Trashed the HP background stuff off

Subject: DeskWriter Problems (RE)
My deskwriter problems (DeskWriter 3.1 serial version):
True type font does not print on paper as it appears on the screen.
The spacing is very poor when I format the text as underlined and
bold. This occurs with each true type font which is installed.
The only Adobe installed font (AGaramond) prints properly.
When I use the DeskWriter 2.1 both fonts print properly,
although close inspection show a separation of characters with
version 3.1 which makes the font easier to read.
In summary, printing with ONLY bold true type fonts is acceptable,
but bold AND underlined text is not acceptable.

The answer depends upon what you want to do with the differentiation.
If you want to exclude one or the other, the Network Control Panel can
differentiate between Phase 1 and Phase 2 EtherTalk packets. Select Phase 2
and that's all your computer will receive. Select Phase 1 ...
If you want some kind of count comparing the number of packets of both
types, the Apple Internet Router can differentiate between Phase 1 and
Phase 2 packets and it will show statistics.
If you want to observe packets and know which are which phase, you need a
packet sniffer such as EtherPeek or NetMinder Ethernet.
I do not believe that NetAtlas differentiates between the two types.
What exactly is the reason for your request? Maybe the question you asked
is not going to give you an answer that satisfies your need.

I'll add my $0.02 worth to Richard Lim's posting a few days ago.
I visited an Apple dealer in Bremen on the 11th and was told that
Apple Germany probably will wait until after CeBit in Hannover (the
end of March) before announcing the pricing here. In addition, they
were not interested in making any deals on the IIsi or ci since
(in Germany) they are not officially discontinued.
I am not particularly thrilled with having to wait a month and a half longer

Subject: Font corruption-caution
I recently noticed that the font display in Word 5.1 was corrupted. That is,
the kerning seemed to be too wide in places and too close elsewhere. For
example, in the drop down font menu on the left side of the ribbon, the font
names even overlapped somewhat.
The solution was easy--reinstall the Geneva and Courier fonts from the
System 7.01 disk. That corrected it.
Not really desiring to find the cause by trying to repeat it, I am guessing
what may have caused it. My *guess* is that I recently installed MacInTax,
which installs some of its own fonts (including Geneva and Courier, I think).
Now, I don't know for sure that installation of MacInTax caused this problem,
but I thought I should relay what I do know happened since it is "tax time"
and many people are using the neat MacInTax program.
If anyone else has had this problem and knows the cause, please share it.

There is also a Fraktur (type 1 PS, I think) at umich. It's not real
easy to find, though. If I remember correctly, it's one of a set of
three fonts uploaded together under a single name. Seems like the
individual font name is DTF Fraktur, and it's packaged with DTF
Bamberg and something else. I don't remember what the name of the
collection is. I've got an index print of umich's fonts around here

In our computing centre we have installed a HP LaserJet 4M printer

turn connected to two Mac SI via Ethernet and to one Mac SI via AppleTalk.
On all 3 machines printing results impossible if PrintMonitor v7.0 is

process. Of course canceling the job keeps PrintMonitor "asleep" for a

I would like to know if there is a possibile solution to this. We would
prefer to have Print Monitor process the assigned jobs in the background.
If you reply to the list, please forward your message to me as well.

We have LCII with System 7.0.1. These were upgraded recently from
System 6.0.7 which had the postscript fonts. With the TrueType fonts

problems:
1. Every time we print the True Type fonts are downloaded.
Which takes incredibly long time.
2. Fonts like Avantgarde are substituted with Courier.

I was apparently wrong about the LCIII having stereo capabilities.
Anyway, the technical specifications I managed to wrangle from
Apple say:
Sound Generator
o Monophonic 8-bit digital-analog conversion using 22khz sample rate--
capable of driving stereo headphones or other stereo equipment through

I think this is sales talk for saying that the LCIII is only capable of

very few people really make use of stereo on the Mac, but it matters some
to me, especially in a home machine. Sorry for any confusion I may have

I keep getting an interesting problem that I can't figure out.
So I turn to the all knowing net for advice. The problem is:
When I load a MacDraw document form a shared drive and make chnages,
the program will not let me save back to the original location
What I get instead is Disk Error ID -50. Even If I change the file
name I get the same error message. Any ideas?
I think this is a MacDraw bug. Your shared drive has too much free space! I
think if you have over 128 MB of free space MacDraw thinks the disk is full.
Try creating a dummy file to get the free space down and see if that fixes the
problem.
We had the same problem with a Japanese version of MacDraw.

I believe this is the second time I saw this message. Is this an organized

I uploaded NewLook 1.3 (which I downloaded from AOL) for the benefit of
those netters who experienced problems with Greg's Buttons. I don't know

It looks like the problem you are having has to do with the font that
you chose in NowMenus to draw the menus in. That font does not have
the cloverleaf. If you go back to the NowMenus control panel and reselect
Chicago as the menu font, all will go back to normal.
Now on a side note, does anyone else have this problem????
On my Mac IIci, when I try to choose another font that is loaded
by suitcase 2.1.2, it sometimes shows up and sometimes doesn't.
What I mean is that after loading up NowMenus and finder comes up,
pulling down the Apple menu (the only one that NowMenus modifies)
provides me with a Chicago 10pt font when it is supposed to be
Futura Light 10pt. I've run Font Harmony and all checks out okay!
System is IIci, Now Utilities 4.0.1 (not p yet), cache, plethora
of extensions, 8-24gc (+builtin video), System 7.1.

Folks, I've found a couple negative interactions (And my colleagues say
it is physically impossible for me to be diplomatic) these past couple
days whose sharing may be worthwhile. Not generally worthwhile, mind, but
maybe I can save a couple of you the same frustrations.
These non-desired perturbations occurred on my office IIcx, goosed with
a DayStar 33MHZ 030/FPU, running MODE32 to access all 20MB of memory.
First came a system crash when I asked for "help" within the new Power-
Point 3. It did not occur when I booted with extensions off, so I used
Extensions Manager to start turning things off. The culprit turned out
to be the SuperMenu extension to Hand Off II. The problem does not occur
on my home IIci. Connectix suggested several things to try, none of which
ameliorated the situation. I thanked those fine folk for the suggestions
and allowed as how I'd maybe stretched that IIcx past its useful life. I
looked at BeHierarchic. Same capability. No conflict. I sent Fabien
Octave his shareware fee.
Today came another one. Invoking the MacWrite II spell checker caused the
dread bus error. Again the problem did not occur if I booted with all
extensions off. Sheesh! Didn't I just go through this exercise last week?
OK, what's killing it? Turns out it was Lee Mail, which I had just pulled
in after we got modern and got our Macs direct-connected to the InterNet
recently. Just to prove that stupidity is its own reward, I adjusted the
memory of Lee Mail from its default 256K to 512K, and voila! The conflict
went away. That didn't make any sense. MacWrite crashed on the bus error.
Why should changing Lee Mail's size keep MacWrite from crashing? I purely
wish I understood this stuff.
The heck of all this is that I don't see the problems with my semi-modern
Mac IIci. Only on the old boxes that I've upgraded with ostensibly the
most transparent (Where have I heard that word before) stuff like DayStar
boards and MODE32. I'm getting to the point where, if I had it to do over
again, I wouldn't try to upgrade my Macs. 'Cept maybe by official Apple
board swaps. Pricey, but maybe cost effective.

I had nearly the exact symptoms you describe in not being able to boot from
the system partition after a crash. Two other things that I observed in my
situation were that Norton would tell me "this disk may still be damaged..."
after it got done recovering the partition. Norton would also see an extra
partition -- when it gave me the dialog asking me to choose a drive, I could
cycle through one more partition than I thought I had.
I think this is related to the problem Ric Ford spent the last two columns in
MacWeek on.
I found that my problem was created when I partitioned a drive that had
already
had a single large partition created on it. I describe it as there being a
ghost of the old large partition hanging around. When I reformatted my drives
(this happened more than once, ouch) being careful not to let the hard drive
software establish a default partition before I could define my smaller
partitions, the problem went away.

I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem. My PowerBook 140's screen
on start-up went all black (i.e. back light still on but all pixels turn black
regardless of contrast setting). Sometimes, instead of all black, some
interesting patterns showed up on the screen but they quickly went back to all
black. This happened once last week and then consistantly this week at every
start-up.
My PowerBook is out of warrenty so I thought I should at least look at the
screen connections. Opening the main housing and re-seating the screen cable
did not help. I then opened the screen case and removed the screen from the
aluminum shielding. Both the screen data cable and power cable looked okay,
so
I just put everything back and figured I had failed to find anything wrong.
BUT, when I powered on the Mac, the screen worked fine! Has been working
after
several start-ups with no sign of the problem.
Could anyone give me some idea what was wrong and tell me if I actually did
something to fix it? Right now I'm guessing the problem will return.

I don't think I've ever seen a Mac application with a print-text-to-file
routine.
I'm sure you could do it with macros in WordPerfect. Things get a little
hairy if you want to change headers and footers on the fly, but can still
be done. Spacing in H/Fs is also an issue unless you hand space in a mono-
spaced font when you create the file. (As a "never uses spaces for horizontal
alignment" purist, I shudder at the thought of that...)
You might want to consider using RTF. If they have any kind of word processor
on a Mac or Windows machine, they ought to be able to do at least a half
decent job of reading an RTF format file.

Subject: Quickdraw printer drivers
Here's a question to which I fear there may not be a good answer; but
I'm asking it anyway, since I'm not sure.
I print from my LC II to a StyleWriter (original), which does a good job or
better, most of the time. Now a few days ago we bought a GCC PLP II laser
printer for my wife's office, and it's been sitting at home temporarily, so
I've gotten to play with it. Like the StyleWriter, the PLPII is a QuickDraw
printer: no PostScript.
What puzzles me is that the StyleWriter does not seem to be able to print a
hairline (very thin), while the PLPII can, even though the StyleWriter has
a finer resolution (360 dpi) than the PLPII (which is only 300 dpi). I
assume the difference lies in the software driver, not in the capabilities
of the hardware. If so, why didn't Apple (or someone else) write a driver
for the StyleWriter that is capable of printing a hairline? I've tried the
GDT BetterWriter drivers, by the way, and they don't cut it either.
Any suggestions? I'm going to lose the laser printer in a few days, and I'm
afraid I won't respect my StyleWriter any more.
Will Porter / University of Houston
(BTW: the GDT PLP II so far seems to be a real ace, at a cost just a little
above $800--and toner cartridges are only $25!)

Subject: Removing Balloon Help
System7 Finder mods
I know that given a bit of time, the following could be performed with
ResEdit, but the operative word here is 'time'....
I remember reading of a utility that would remove the 'Balloon Help' icon
>From the menubar of the System7 Finder, but I'm having a problem locating
this
little item.
My problem is that our menubars are becoming so crowded that SuperClock
now
hides the Timbuktu icon. Since Balloon help is virtually useless to me, I'm
hoping that if I remove it's icon, Timbuktu's icon will shift into the space
vacated by Balloon Help.
If anyone can point me to the proper resources within the Finder, I'll go
ahead and perform the surgery with ResEdit.... however I was hoping to save
timewith a simple utility.
Thanks in advance.....

I had a long fight with a Mac IIfx (System 7.0.1, TuneUp, many
extensions) which exhibited similar symptoms. In this case, I used
GetMyAddress to determine if MacTCP was alive or dead, and we noticed
that every other time we restarted, MacTCP would not initialize
properly. If I remember correctly, there was a problem between
AppleTalk Remote Access, MacTCP 1.1 and Broadcast. When we eliminated
Broadcast, the problem disappeared.

I would strongly recommend that you consider Symmetry Software's Acta7.
Nominally an outliner, it can also store scrap items such as pictures and
sounds as labeled topics within a file. The package includes both an
application and a DA version. It imports and exports in many formats
including text, MacWrite, RTF, and Scrapbook. Street price for this
commercial package is about $60.
Since the application only requires 512K of memory, I keep it open all
the time for notetaking and brainstorming on the fly. It supports sound
recording/playback and phone dialing, all in a very intuitive manner. In
addition to its outstanding capabilities as an wordsmithing tool, Acta is
also quite servicable as an organizer for maintaining to do lists, names,
phone numbers & addresses, scrap items, etc. Under System 7, Acta's
publish and subscribe capability allows for creative linking of topics
with other applications.
I also use it to maintain customized "help" topics with concrete examples
to help me deal with the myriad of operating systems with which I
interact. A command line interface requiring the specification of
numerous cryptic parameters is MUCH easier when pseudo-on-line help and
an editable example is available in the adjacent Acta window and issuing
the actual command is just a copy & paste away!
I have no connection with Symmetry other than as a very long term
satisfied user of Acta.

Subject: Screen dimmer after upgrade?
I have a Macintosh SE w/FDHD drive that was upgraded first to increase the
memory to 4MB and later the SE/30 upgrade. Both upgrades were performed
by licensed apple technicians. After theses two
upgrade I began to notice that I had was experiencing eye strain. Then a
colleague pointed out that my screen was noticably dimmer than hers. I
checked against other SEs and Classics in our offices and my screen does seem
dimmer even though I have it turned up to its brightest setting. Also the
lighted portion of my screen seems slightly smaller than on the other office
Macs. Could these be symptoms of an overloaded power supply, or is something
else going on here? I'd appreciate any thoughts on this. My Bitnet address
is: PRPREM @ GSUVM1 and my Internet address is: PRCREM @ SMTPGWY2.GSU.EDU
Thanks for any ideas.

Hello again!
After finally, FINALLY, receiving my IIvx from Apple (the DAY OF the price cut
mind you, and boy am I pissed that I paid the high price!), I'm finally able

I've got Kermit0.98(63), but the file transfer option is really unstable. I
can't transfer files with a remote UNIX host running C-Kermit at all!
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Thanks a lot!!

ResEdit 2.1.1 on the Developer CD ROMs has a Code Template that does a
great job of showing the assembly code in a code resource. You can use the
Hex Edit window in ResEdit to actually enter new code. The price is right
and it is useable.

Subject: Startup Problems
I am having problems with startup on my Mac IIci.
When I start the computer, I get the question mark flashing
inside of the disk icon (presumably the mac cannot find a
startup disk.) I shut the computer off for about 10 seconds,
then startup works fine.
It seems that this must be a disk problem (maybe mechanical
as opposed to software related?). I have checked the unit
with Norton, and no problems turned up. Also, DFA says
the disk is fine.
The setup is as follows:
Mac IIci 12MB RAM
Maxtor LXT213 Hard Drive (213 Mb)
No other SCSI devices.
If anybody has any suggestions, I would appreciate it.

Subject: Tektronix multimedia patent
**************************************************************
Tektronix Claims Broad Patent Rights for Indexing Video Images
**************************************************************
As is becoming more and more common, lawyers are again hard
at work trying to extort money from computer companies.
A subsidiary of Tektronix, the Green Valley Group, claims
that patent #5,012,334 gives them broad rights for using
personal computers to index video images stored on
LaserDiscs or other media. Tektronix has sent legal notices
indicating that they will be enforcing the patent - asking
for money, of course.
The Tektronix legal notice states:
"Claims 1 and 5 [of the patent] apply to the use, in
conjunction with other products, of a video disk
(or CD-ROMs or floppy disks) to hold an indexed library
of video image sequences. Claims 9, 11, and 12 apply
to the use of key words to index, classify, and access
video image sequences."
As far as I can tell, this seems to apply to *every*
multimedia product in existence, at least any product that
uses video clips. It probably also applies to every
multimedia kiosk as well. Especially ludicrous is the late
patent filing date: Jan 29, 1990 (!).
To express your displeasure at these sort of nuisance legal
battles, please contact Tektronix and indicate your
displeasure with their ridiculous patent claims. It might
be helpful if you indicate that you will be less likely
to purchase Tektronix equipment unless they repent.
I appreciate your help in this matter.

Dear Netters,
The above question a netter asked poses some interesting problems for System 7
and LCs. The following is a detailed explanation of why errors of Type 1, 2,
3, 28 errors occcur.
If you have any further questions about the terms used below, feel free to
write back to me.
Type 1 Error: Bus error
Type 2 Error: address error
Type 3 Error: Illegal Instruction error
Type 28 Error: Stack has moved into application heap.
Summary: An old piece of software accessing addresses on the processor will
make all four of these errors occur. In short, if it came before System 7
the only recent system it will work on is 6.0.7. Keep backups of these
applications, and the documents you make of these applications going every day
in case of a crash, and you can keep on running System 7 with these apps.
System 7 a mac expert told me addresses to the CPU differently. It is as
though system 7 has a 4 number extension on the zip code of every address.
Thus if the 4 numbers are missing, then the application will quit. This is
especially painful on LCs because of the part 16bit BUS on a 32bit processor.
Thus you have half-ass (excuse my language) passageways into a fully capable
CPU. To quote Mary Poppins "In short you have a ghastly mess."
Hmm I wonder if the same Type errors occur frequently on 680LC40 machines?
If you keep things backed up these errors won't destroy any files you are
working on. Is it too painful to hit COMMAND-S every 5 minutes, if it saves
an hour of retyping a file? I don't think so. It is only two keys, to save
over a thousand in working. Cost-Benefit - COMMAND-S every 5
and your computer won't trash your file.
Good Luck,
Sincerely,
ABRODY @ CLARKU
